Wisdom Teeth Extraction Process

Initial Consultation

Dr. Miller will perform an oral examination to determine if wisdom teeth extractions are required for your unique situation. If Dr. Miller determines that wisdom teeth extractions are necessary, he will provide a personalized treatment plan for you, which may include anxiety-reducing sedatives that you’ll pick up at a pharmacy of your choosing and take before your appointment.

Initial Consultation
Removal

In most cases Dr. Miller will administer a local anesthesia to numb the extraction site. Once you are relaxed and sufficiently numb, he will skillfully remove any problematic wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth surgery is usually a relatively quick procedure and most patients will not feel much, if any pain due to the sedatives and local anesthetic.

Removal
Recovery

After your wisdom teeth have been removed, Dr. Miller will either pack the extraction site with gauze or close the wound with a few, small stitches. At this point, our dental team will monitor you to ensure that the sedatives are wearing off before letting a friend or family member drive you home. You will also receive post-operative instructions and, if needed, a prescription for pain medication and a follow-up appointment to ensure your recovery goes smoothly.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars and typically the last set of permanent teeth to emerge in the back corners of your mouth. It’s possible for some people to have fewer or even no wisdom teeth, however, most people have four, with one located in each quadrant of your mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left).

Wisdom teeth typically start to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, although this timing can vary from person to person. Some individuals’ wisdom teeth will emerge fully and properly aligned with the rest of their teeth, while others may encounter various issues related to the growth and positioning of their wisdom teeth.

We often recommend that patients see us during their late-teen years for a wisdom teeth evaluation to determine the condition of their wisdom teeth. While some people go through life with no wisdom teeth complications, it’s a good idea to see a dental professional who can analyze your mouth and take steps to prevent oral health issues from occurring down the line.

Before your extraction

In general, wisdom teeth extractions are very safe. However, there are some cases in which a patient should disclose past medical history to our dental team to ensure patient safety. For example, Dr. Miller needs to know if you have:

  • Heart damage, a congenital heart defect, or heart valve replacement
  • A suppressed or impaired immune system
  • Cirrhosis–also known as liver disease
  • Any artificial joints (e.g. hip, knee, or shoulder replacements)
  • A history of bacterial endocarditis

If you have any of these conditions, please let our dental team know immediately. Knowing this information will help us mitigate complications, ensuring a safe and successful extraction.

aftercare instructions

Proper aftercare is extremely important following a wisdom teeth extraction. To reduce the risk of infection and improve recovery:

  • Take the recommended medication if needed
  • Limit their activity for 24-72 hours after their extraction
  • Stay biting on a firmly rolled piece of gauze for approximately one hour. After one hour, check the gauze and if bleeding persists, repeat for another hour.
  • Avoid creating a vacuum in their mouth by sucking, spitting, swishing
  • Do not drink through a straw for at least 24 hours after the procedure
  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco products while the wound is healing
  • Eat soft foods for a few days after the procedure
  • Sleep with their heads propped up to prevent prolonged bleeding
  • Gently apply an ice pack to the side of the face for ten minutes at a time to reduce swelling
  • Continue to gently brush and floss teeth

Frequently Asked Questions

Affordable Wisdom Teeth Removal Mesa, AZ

How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems, but if they’re impacted or growing in at an angle, they can lead to pain, swelling, or infection. Common signs include tenderness in the gums, jaw discomfort, or swelling at the back of your mouth. Even if you aren’t experiencing symptoms, early removal can prevent future issues. If you’re looking for wisdom tooth removal near you, Mesa Dental Implants and Dentures is here to help!

Delaying wisdom teeth removal can result in impacted teeth, infections, or damage to neighboring teeth. Severe cases can lead to cysts or jawbone problems, which are more difficult to treat. To avoid these complications, it’s best to act early. If you’re looking for comfortable and timely wisdom tooth removal in Mesa, give us a call or schedule your consultation online today!

After wisdom teeth removal, stick to soft, easy-to-eat foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, applesauce, smoothies, and broths.

Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods to protect the surgical site and promote healing.

Wisdom teeth typically come in between ages 17 and 25, though the timing can vary for each person.

Wisdom teeth removal usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the number and complexity of the teeth being removed.

No, not everyone has wisdom teeth. While most people develop four wisdom teeth, some may have fewer, and others may not develop them at all.

Removing a wisdom tooth can provide several benefits for your dental health, including:

  • Preventing crowding | Wisdom teeth can often cause crowding and shifting of other teeth as they try to emerge, leading to bite problems and other dental issues. Removing wisdom teeth can prevent these problems and help preserve your natural teeth alignment.
  • Reducing the risk of infection | Wisdom teeth that are partially erupted can be difficult to clean properly, making them more susceptible to infections and gum disease. Removing the wisdom teeth can help reduce the risk of infection and other dental problems.
  • Relieving pain and discomfort | Wisdom teeth that are impacted or partially erupted can cause pain, swelling, and discomfort. Removing the teeth can provide relief from these symptoms and improve your overall dental health.
  • Preventing damage to adjacent teeth | Wisdom teeth that are impacted or growing at an angle can cause damage to adjacent teeth, leading to decay, infection, and other dental problems. Removing the wisdom teeth can help prevent this damage and preserve the health of surrounding teeth.

Overall, removing wisdom teeth can help improve your dental health and prevent a variety of dental problems. If you’re considering having your wisdom teeth removed, give us a call or book your consultation with Dr. Miller online today!

All-On-4 Dental Implant Warranty

Our implant success rates are so predictable that we offer an unprecedented 5-year implant warranty (some conditions and limitations do apply).

Our 5-year dental implant warranty program*

Your implant will work, or we will remove it and replace it – absolutely free.

Many surgeons will offer this courtesy, but few will do so in writing. In addition, in those rare instances when an implant does fail, corrective surgery such as bone and/or soft tissue grafting is often needed. If we have to remove one of our implants, not only will we replace it absolutely free, but any corrective procedures required will also be performed at no cost.

Your implant will remain functional for 5 years or we will fix it – absolutely free!

Although uncommon, implants can develop problems. This includes loss of bone or gum because of uncontrolled gum disease, overload, or other reasons.

*Conditions and limitations
If an implant fails to integrate we will replace it at no cost, one time only. An annual implant examination including X-rays and regular dental cleanings (every 6 months minimum) in our office is an absolute requirement for this warranty to apply. This warranty does not apply to smokers (including vapers) or to persons who have, or who develop, an uncontrolled systemic health problem, such as, but not limited to, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, severe osteoporosis or any condition requiring long-term steroid use. This warranty does not apply if an implant has failed due to an accident (car accident, etc.). If smoking or a medical condition is suspected as the cause of implant failure or other complication that requires treatment, a medical examination and appropriate blood tests will be required for this warranty to apply.
